YOU'VE GOT THE POWER (March, 2006)
You've Got the Power is a 16-page,
full-color, guide to cancer prevention and early detection. It was
developed for populations that experience a disproportionately high burden of
cancer--underserved racial and ethnic groups, people with low literacy skills,
and those who speak languages other than English.
Designed to educate people about cancer risks and to empower individuals to take control of their own health, You've Got the Power is written in plain and simple language. It contains: facts about cancer and its risk factors; a basic tool for assessing personal risk; a discussion of who is at risk; information about screening for certain cancers; screening guidelines; things to do to lower cancer risk; and where to go for information and help.
The guide was developed by the Connecticut Cancer Partnership and the Connecticut Department of Public Health, in collaboration with Asian Family Services, the American Cancer Society, The Capitol Region Conference of Churches, the Hispanic Health Council, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
The following people served on the Advisory Panel that developed You've
Got the Power:
Coordinator:
Carol E. Bower (DPH Planning Branch)
Members:
Rev. Shelley D.B. Copeland (The Capitol Region
Conference of Churches)
Grace Damio (Hispanic Health Council)
Bruce Gould, MD (UConn School of Medicine)
Mark Samos (Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation)
Sarah Shafir (American Cancer Society)
Vichhyka Shelto (Asian Family Services)
Helen Swede (CT Tumor Registry)
The guide was produced with funding from the U.S. Region 1 Office of Minority Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Cooperative Agreement Number U55/CCU121932-04).

Also the American Cancer Society was inadvertently omitted from the list of partners on p. 14. These errors have been corrected as of 9/28/06. We apologize for any inconvenience they caused.]
