Public Health Committee Deliberates on Bill to Fund
Cancer Plan (3/03/08)
Led by Sen. Mary Ann Handley and Rep. Peggy Sayers, co-Chairs of the Public Health Committee, members of the
television, radio and print media, Connecticut Cancer Partnership volunteers, American Cancer Society volunteers, medical professionals and others joined together
on March 3 for a press conference at the Legislative Office Building in
Hartford to announce SB 459 - "An Act Promoting the Early Detection, Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer and Colon Cancer."
This much needed legislative initiative would expand and fund the next phase of implementing the Connecticut Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. Goals of the plan include improving cancer prevention and early detection in Connecticut, and expanding treatment and support initiatives for survivors. The proposed programs and initiatives include incorporating Nicotine Replacement Therapy as part of the services offered through use of the state tobacco QuitLine, and an expansion of successful screening programs for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer.
Following the conference, the bill was presented before the Public Health Committee, with testimony presented by Dr. Andy Salner, Chair of the Connecticut Cancer Partnership Board of Director, Pat Trotta of the American Cancer Society, who is co-chair of the Partnership's Palliative and Hospice Care Committee, Jerry Mande of Yale Cancer Center, who co-chairs the Partnership's Prevention Committee, Pat Checko of the Match Coalition, who also co-chairs the Prevention Committee, and Dr. Carolyn Runowicz of the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of Connecticut Health Center.
The bill is under deliberation by the Public Health
Committee, and, if approved, will be sent to the Appropriations Committee.
