Partnership Names Lucinda Hogarty Program Director (5/05/08)

Lucinda Hill Hogarty has been named the first Program Director of the Connecticut Cancer Partnership, effective May 20, according to an announcement by Partnership Chair Dr. Andrew Salner. Her appointment culminates a year-long search for a leader of the all-volunteer organization, which is the recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for coordinating comprehensive cancer planning and implementation activities in Connecticut.

Lucinda believes that community-based collaborations are the best way to encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles and to embrace changes that can lead to better cancer prevention and control.

"I'm delighted to to be a part of this approach to cancer control, and can't wait to begin working with the broad array of members and organizations in the Partnership," she said. "The dedication, support, and accomplishments of the Board and Committees have laid the groundwork for the next 5 years of comprehensive cancer control planning and implementation activities. I'm confident that we will make great progress toward reducing the burden of cancer in Connecticut."

Lucinda is a summa cum laude graduate of Tufts University, with a Master of Public Health degree from Yale School of Medicine, and a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Connecticut.

She has worked in Connecticut in health service planning and administration, health promotion, education, and grant administration in a variety of settings for more than 20 years, and brings to the Partnership a wealth of knowledge and experience in these areas.

Before coming to the Partnership, Lucinda was Emergency Public Health Preparedness Coordinator for Eastern Highlands Health District, Director of Academic Administration at the Rectory School in Pomfret, Emergency Public Health Preparedness Planner for the Glastonbury Health Department, and Director of the 12-town Northeast Health District.  Before that, she was ElderCare Coordinator for Day Kimball Hospital, Director of Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of United Services, Program Manager of the Travelers Center on Aging at UConn, and Director for Planning and Public Affairs with the Easter Seal Society of Connecticut.

She is a long-time volunteer with the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery program, which provides support and encouragement to people with breast cancer, and she also volunteers with the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang Camp, a summer camp for children with cancer and other serious illnesses. She has served on a variety of local and regional health-related boards and committees. Her interests range from local wellness, preparedness planning, and chronic disease prevention to global health initiatives.

As Program Director, Lucinda will oversee the development of the Partnership. She will create a strategic plan, provide direction and oversight for implementation of the Connecticut Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan, pursue funding opportunities, secure and coordinate partner commitments, and facilitate legislative activities. Her office will be located at the American Cancer Society in Meriden.

Lucinda has two daughters, both of whom work in public health. She lives in Chester with her husband Tom, who is Director of Campus Safety at Connecticut College.
