Partnership Asks Connecticut Legislature for Funds
to Implement Cancer Control Priorities (2/11/08)
In Connecticut, cancer has long been the leading cause of death for people 45-74 years of age, and
in 2004 it replaced heart disease as the leading cause of death for people 75-84
years of age. It remains the leading cause of premature death for all ages combined.
The 2006 estimated cost of cancer in the U.S. was $206.3 billion, with $78.2 B
for health care, $17.9 B for lost productivity due to illness, and $110.2 B for
lost productivity due to premature death.
In Connecticut, inpatient hospitalizations, alone, cost nearly $600 million a
year.
Despite progress along many fronts in the fight against cancer, the disease claims the lives of nearly 7,000 Connecticut
residents and 20,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Of these cancers, at least half could be prevented or delayed if current knowledge about causes and risk factors were put into
practice.
The Connecticut Cancer Partnership, through its Connecticut Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan, establishes priorities and achievable goals, coordinates statewide efforts, and provides oversight and evaluation in a fiscally responsible manner.
If the strategies and programs within the Plan are fully funded, Connecticut will benefit greatly from health care cost savings, increased productivity, and most importantly, lives saved. The ongoing and complete implementation of the Plan will go a long way toward fulfilling State government’s fundamental responsibility to ensure Connecticut residents equal access to the quality cancer care we need and deserve.
The Connecticut Cancer Partnership is now asking the Legislature to fully fund key priorities of the
Connecticut Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. We received $5.5 million in 2006 to begin implementing the Plan, but continuing annual support of cancer control programs is still needed to address prevention, early detection, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life issues, and to eliminate cancer disparities in Connecticut.
