Connecticut's Cancer Community Voices Priorities for Implementing Cancer Plan at Public Forum (8/03/06)
A Community Comment Meeting was held at Quinnipiac University on August 3, 2006. More than 80 people attended. The meeting was an open session for the purpose of gathering public opinion about priorities selected from the Connecticut Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan 2005-2008 and programs to implement these priorities during the 2006-2007 state fiscal year. The priorities are summarized in the Meeting Announcement.
Following an opening presentation by Partnership Chair Andrew L. Salner, MD, comments were delivered by 18 individuals and organizations from Connecticut's cancer community (see video of meeting proceedings). Written comments also were submitted.
The speakers (in order of appearance) were: Anne Somsel, Fair Haven Community Health Center; Tim Callahan, CADH; Charles Petrillo, Windsor Health Department; Thad King, Chatham Health Department; Ellen Matloff, Yale Cancer Center; Nikki Palmieri, MATCH Coalition; Catherine Weber, UConn School of Medicine; David Parrella, CT Department of Social Services; Kim O'Reilly, Southwest Regional Mental Health Board; Nealy Zimmerman, CT Prison Hospice Association; Marlo Bish, Coalition for Improvement of End of Life Care; Sam Crowley, Ledge Light Health District; Jennifer Bendisky, Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center; Katie Shuttleworth, CT Department of Public Health; Brian Ellsworth, CT Council for Hospice and Palliative Care; Richard Edelson, Yale Cancer Center; Ellen Darnalis, Hartford Hospital; and Katrina Clark, Fair Haven Community Health Center.
During the 2006 legislative session, the Connecticut General Assembly awarded $5.5 million in new funding to the Connecticut Department of Public Health for implementing selected initiatives. The funding follows the recommendations of the Connecticut Cancer Partnership and the priorities discussed in the Connecticut Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan, 2005-2008.
The Partnership will determine final project concepts, based on information in the Plan and comments from the meeting. These concepts and recommendations will be submitted to the Department of Public Health to guide their allocation of the funds. Options for allocation of funds include Requests for Proposals, contract amendments, and Memoranda of Agreement.
