Current Activities
Connecticut Cancer Pain Initiative (CCPI)
Founded in 1990, CCPI is a non-profit voluntary organization of the American
Cancer Society, New England Division. It is an inter-disciplinary team of healthcare
professionals and consumers working to improve pain management, through education and
advocacy. The CCPI believes that people with pain have a basic right to good pain
assessment and management. There is no fee to join CCPI, and all who support its
mission and are willing to work to achieve its goals, are encouraged to join. CCPI
is a member of the American Alliance of Cancer Pain Initiatives.
CCPI accomplished the following in 2005:
-
After 2 years of negotiation by the CCPI, the Connecticut Medical Board of Examiners
adopted a pain statement modified after the Federation of State Medical Board’s 2004
recommended "Model Policy for the Use of Controlled
Substances for the Treatment of Pain" (PDF, 131 KB)
- In September 2005, members of CCPI published a paper in Connecticut Medicine, the journal of the Connecticut State Medical Society, entitled, "The Medical Examining Board Speaks on Pain Management: Everyone Should Listen." (PDF, 189 KB)
As a result of these activities, physicians in Connecticut should feel more supported in their pain management practices and less afraid of censure for appropriate use of opioids.
