Current Activities
The Committee is working to address and strengthen the following aspects of end-of-life care:
- Preparing healthcare professionals to give the highest quality palliative and end-of-life treatment to patients and their families
- Integrating palliative and end-of-life services into health care delivery systems,
particularly those serving minority and underserved populations
- Adopting public policies that ensure full access to services for all residents
- Researching best practices in end-of-life care
- Raising consumer awareness of the benefits and availability of palliative and hospice care services in Connecticut
Efforts to improve end-of-life care in Connecticut are spearheaded by state organizations dedicated to ensuring that the best quality palliative and hospice care is available to all residents. The Partnership’s Palliative and Hospice Care Committee works closely with the following groups, whose activities are essential to successful achievement of the goals and objectives of the Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan.
The Connecticut Cancer Pain Initiative (CCPI)
A program of the American Cancer Society, the CCPI is dedicated to ending
needless suffering from chronic and acute pain due to cancer and other
diseases. Volunteer members work to remove barriers to good pain relief,
through education and policy advocacy.
The Connecticut Council for Hospice and Palliative Care
The Council is the provider organization for 25 hospices in the state. Its mission is
to promote and facilitate access to hospice and palliative care at the state and national
levels through leadership, advocacy, and education. Two of the Council's current
projects--the Connecticut Prison Hospice Initiative and
the Hospice-Veteran Partnership of Connecticut--support
the goals and objectives of the Connecticut Cancer Plan.
The Connecticut Coalition to Improve End of Life Care
The Connecticut Coalition to Improve End-of-Life Care is a statewide coalition that seeks
to improve care for the dying and their families.
Connecticut Coalition of End of Life Nurse Educators (CCELNE)
This group of Connecticut nurses has been trained by the national End of Life Nursing
Education Consortium Project (ELNEC) to teach end of life care to nursing students and practicing
nurses.
